Andreas Macco, upon receiving teaching and singing degrees at the Musikhochschulen of Stuttgart, Frankfurt and Vienna, began his career with fixed engagements at the theatres in Hannover (where he had won a singing competition), Frankfurt and Bonn. Since 2004 his work is freelance.
In 1994 he began to make international guest appearances. Being invited frequently to Italy, he has sung in Bologna, Rovigo, Pisa, Brescia, at La Scala in Milan, at the San Carlo in Naples, in Rome, at the Arena di Verona and at the Maggio Musicale in Florence. Furthermore he has sung in Tokyo, Zürich, Lyon, Rouen, Moscow, Riga, Donezk, Athens, at the festivals in Bregenz, Salzburg, Bayreuth, and at the Ruhrtriennale.
His repertoire stretches from Monteverdi operas over Mozart’s Sarastro, Leporello, Don Giovanni, Commendatore and Don Alfonso to the villains in Les Contes d’Hoffmann, Méphistophélès in Gounod’s Faust and Golaud; to Wagner’s Holländer, Wotan, Gurnemanz and Pogner; to Verdi’s Filippo II and Conte di Walter; and to Vodnik/the Water Gnome (Rusalka) and the Animal Trainer/Athlete (Lulu). All in all, sixty roles.
In concert halls in Vienna (Konzerthaus und Musikverein), Moscow (Great Hall of the Tchaikovsky Conservatory), Leipzig (Gewandhaus), Dresden (Kreuzkirche), Berlin (Philharmonie), Montreal (Festival La Lanaudière), Taipei, Amsterdam (Concertgebouw), Rome (Sala Santa Cecilia), Salzburg (Grosses Festspielhaus), Athens (Odeon of Herodes Atticus), Frankfurt (Alte Oper) and others, he has sung central works of concert literature ranging from Bach and Handel, over Mozart, Rossini, Verdi, Dvořák and Mendelssohn to Bernd Alois Zimmermann.
He has sung Lied recitals devoted to the songs of Schubert, Schumann, Wolf, Ibert and others.
He has gained invaluable experience working with such conductors as Claudio Abbado, Giuseppe Sinopoli, Zubin Mehta, Andris Nelsons, Placido Domingo, Vladimir Fedoseyev, Gianluigi Gelmetti, Marco Armiliato, Michael Gielen, Sylvain Cambreling, Franz Welser-Möst, Christoph von Dohnányi, Gary Bertini and Eliahu Inbal; and with such stage directors as Peter Stein, Robert Wilson, William Friedkin, Peter Mussbach, Katharina Wagner, Stéphane Braunschweig, La Fura dels Baus and Achim Freyer.
Since 2010 Andreas Macco is Professor of Singing at the Mozarteum, Salzburg.
Masterclasses have been 2016 and 2018 in Kaunas, Lithuania
and 2017 at the International summer academy Mozarteum, Salzburg, Austria
